Power Relations in the Project of Economy of Communion: A Brazillian Case Study

Title: Power Relations in the Project of Economy of Communion: A Brazillian Case Study.

Abstract: The exploratory research, summarized here, is inserted in a context of a socio and environmental "crisis". This "crisis" forwards the need for transformative change. A proposed change, added to the existing ones, is being investigated as an alternative form of management: the Economy of Communion. Within this theme, this research is limited to an attempt of analysis of power in companies that adopt this form of management. First, it was researched with entrepreneurs what would be a common vision to characterize the object. We performed a case study in one of the major Brazilian companies that fit the concept of Economy of Communion. The summary tables produced on the interviews provide evidence to demonstrate idiosyncrasies in the exercise of the power of this new proposed management.

The proposition of a model of management in manufacturing capacity

Title: A proposição de um modelo de gestão da capacidade na manufatura. (The proposition of a model of management in manufacturing capacity).

Abstract: This research presents a model of productive capacity management for manufacturing systems by combining the concepts of the Theory of Constraints and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). The main objective of this paper is to propose a model of capacity management to answer the following questions: i) what capacity indicators should be considered and how to measure them to measure the productive capacity of the manufacturing? ii) what is the real capacity of the production system examined before a certain ratio between capacity and market demand? The discussion of the proposed model is relevant to the extent that the definition of productive capacity enables better management of resources and capabilities, improve production scheduling and meeting the demands imposed by the market. This study presents a proposition of using Operating Income Index Global (IROG) with a different approach from that of the traditional literature that deals with the theme, presented by Nakajima (1988). The survey results allowed to develop a model capable of determining the productive capacity of the system and the impact on the productive capacity of the whole system, when considering the quality of nonconformities that occur after the bottleneck resource of production flow.

An approach of redesigning normative instruction n. 18 from the operations and service management view

Title: Proposição de uma Abordagem para o Redesenho da Instrução Normativa 18 a partir dos elementos da Engenharia e Gestão de Serviços. (An approach of redesigning normative instruction n. 18 from the operations and service management view).

Abstract: Services operations management has been a research subject of many researchers, due to its increasing participation in the countries’ economies. A research topic on this theme is related to services provided to the public sector, due to some peculiarities on the act of contracting and controlling the services. Thus, the present study intends to bring up the discussion about service operations management in public administration bodies. To do that, this research employs elements of the Service Engineering and Management and concepts related to Outsourcing. In addition to that, an analysis is made on the current Normative Instruction No. 18 which regulates the service provision for public bodies. This work was done using bibliographic and documental research. Finally, a generic model is proposed as a driver for future and further discussions and reviews of the Normative Instruction.

Application of Theory of Constraints Process Thinking to sustainable development: A theoretical proposal

Title: Aplicação do Processo de Pensamento da Teoria das Restrições para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável: Uma Proposição Teórica. (Application of Theory of Constraints Process Thinking to sustainable development: A theoretical proposal)

Abstract: This article shows the application of Theory of Constraints Thinking Process to contribute in developing actions that result in sustainability of industries. In order to achieve this objective, some tools from the Theory of Constraints Thinking Process were used, more specifically the Current Reality Tree, the Evaporation Clouds and Future Reality Tree. Undesired effects were identified and structured through the Current Reality Tree (CRT) to identify the underlying causes. The CRT exposed the assumptions that underlie a possible conflict situation and therefore hamper the implementation of potential solutions. Finally, it was built a Future Reality Tree to glipmse the possible ramifications of the solutions suggested. In this sense, the thinking process served to possibility that a reflection of the organization to reduce its environmental impact.

Critical chain of the theory of constraints applied to executive engineering project management: a case study in a petroleum refinery

Title: Aplicabilidade da Corrente Crítica da Teoria das Restrições no Gerenciamento de Projetos Executivos de Engenharia: Um Estudo de Caso em uma Refinaria de Petróleo. (Critical chain of the theory of constraints applied to executive engineering project management: a case study in a petroleum refinery).

Journal: This paper aims to evaluate the applicability of the Critical Chain of the Theory of Constraints in the management of Executive Engineering projects in a petroleum refinery. The focus is given in the multi-project environment, in which the human resources are shared with the teams being involved in multiple projects simultaneously. This is a challenge both for traditional Project Management approaches, as well as for alternative methods such as the Critical Chain. Therefore, this study analyzes the Critical Chain method in this particular situation and proposes a systematic approach to its implementation in the Executive Engineering Project Management in a petroleum refinery. The paper follows the procedures recommended for qualitative research, especially the ones related to case studies. The results have been promising as they reinforce the need for additional research in the aforementioned environment. In addition, the proposal for an implementation method based on the Critical Chain in this kind of environment has proved to be appropriate requiring however adaptations as it presents certain limitations.
