Organizational culture: synergies and allergies between Hofstede and Trompenaars

Title: Cultura organizacional: sinergias e alergias entre Hofstede e Trompenaars. (Organizational culture: synergies and allergies between Hofstede and Trompenaars).

Abstract: Among the different elements to be considered in management, cultural aspects have been placed in the central of the organizational discussions. This position derives of the fact that the sustainable competitive advantage originates from the understanding, respect and use of the different habits, practices, points of view and competences. Companies acting local or global need to look at the characteristics originated from your human capital. In this sense that the present work presents some evidences of the cultural implications, looked from the prism of cultural dimensions. A short revision of the theme was briefly analyzed and discussed under the light of the presented theoretical references.

The Processes of Organizational Learning and Innovation: a Longitudinal Case Study (1986-1995) in a Company of Brazilian Oil sector

Title: Os processos de aprendizagem organizacional e a inovação: um estudo de caso longitudinal (1986-1995) em uma empresa do setor petrolífero brasileiro. (The Processes of Organizational Learning and Innovation: a Longitudinal Case Study (1986-1995) in a Company of Brazilian Oil sector).

Abstract: Innovation is one important factor for companies. This study presents a longitudinal case study focusing on the learning processes associated to innovation on an oil industry company. To conduct the study, which was of exploratory nature, interviews were conducted with professionals connected to the history of the company. Reports about the processes of innovation were described by content analysis and related to: the types of innovation proposed by Schumpeter (1942); the types of learning proposed by Malerba (1992); the modes of learning single loop and double loop of Argyris and Schön (1978); the ways of knowledge conversion of Nonaka and Takeuchi (1997); and the creation of spaces of knowledge of Nonaka et. al (1998, 2000). The research results indicate that Revista Produção Online. Florianópolis, SC, v.11, n. 2, p. 526-564, abr./jun., 2011. 527 radical innovation tends to require a wider range of learning styles, if compared to incremental innovations. Still, the internalization and socialization seems to prevail in contexts of radical innovation, while externalization and combination are more frequent in incremental innovation contexts. Finally, the results point to the fact that the single loop learning is more directly related to incremental innovations, while the double loop learning is more present in radical innovation contexts.

Application of design of experiments for product development in the sanitizing industry

Title: Aplicação das técnicas de planejamento e análise de experimentos no desenvolvimento de novos produtos em uma empresa de saneantes. (Application of design of experiments for product development in the sanitizing industry).

Abstract: New product development in chemical industry is a very important factor in competitive strategy. The development occurs mainly from theoretical data and laboratory tests. However, these tests do not represent statistics robustness and often require greater time to development a new product. This article proposes the use of design and analysis of experiments to support the new product development team in an industry that develops disinfectant product for use in hospitals. The statistical method, analysis of experiments, presents a range of possible responses to the output variable, unlike the traditional method used by the company analyzed. Design of experiments method, initially increases the cost and labor force, however it saves in response time and quality of responses, enabling a reduction of cost in new product formulation.

Service process analysis using process engineering and the theory of constraints thinking process

Title: Service process analysis using process engineering and the theory of constraints thinking process.

Abstract: Purpose – The paper aims to present a case of integration between process engineering and the thinking process of the theory of constraints (TP-TOC) through the analysis of an organization's processes, pointing out the complementary aspects between the two theories and their benefits for the organization.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper has used an Institution of Higher Education as its case study. The research has started by identifying the processes of the institution and choosing one to model according to the process engineering approach. The process was then analyzed through the elaboration of the current reality tree technique. After the analysis, the evaporating clouds technique was applied in order to breach the assumptions that were avoiding the problems to be solved. Finally, the process has been redesigned based on the results of the previous steps.

Findings– The analysis of this case contributes towards understanding and identifying the causes of the current problems in the studied processes, providing a systemic and systematic view through the proposed approach.

Originality/value – The paper proposes an approach that enables a systematic and systemic analysis of organizations' processes through the use of process engineering and the TP-TOC.

Power Relations in the Economy Project Communion

Title: Relações de Poder no Projeto de Economia de Comunhão. (Power Relations in the Economy Project Communion).

Abstract: The exploratory research, summarized here, is inserted in a context of ìcrisisî socio. This ìcrisisî forwards the need for transformative change. A proposed change, added to existing, is being investigated as an alternative form of management: the Economy of Communion. Within this theme, this research is limited to an attempt of analysis of power in companies that adopt this form of management. First, it was researched, along with entrepreneurs representing a common vision to characterize the object. We performed a case study in one of the major companies that fit the concept of Economy of Communion. The method of content analysis was used to extract conclusions about the behavior of the phenomenon of power in these organizations. The summary tables produced on the interviews provide evidence to demonstrate idiosyncrasies in the exercise of the power of this new proposed management in counterpoint with the disseminated widely in the production system. Such evidence indicated the influence of the assumptions supporters of the Project on power relations, making possible an organizational practice close to what is called a radical humanist paradigm in organizational theory
